On a sunny winter’s afternoon in the heart of Western Sydney, 16 VenuesLive staff took to the skidpan at Sydney Motor Sport Park for the chance to be the VenuesLive driver in the upcoming Beat The Blue event on September 7 (for those of you who don’t know – Beat The Blue is an annual racing event that pits Highway Patrol Officers against members of the general public).
The practice laps were all very tentative, at least until Rebecca Barry got in the driver’s seat and showcased a couple of donuts for the crowd (and police!) to enjoy.
It was a tight contest to decide the top 6 with quick times in the Toyota 86. Julian Keith (Media & Comms) set the benchmark early, breaking the 30 second mark and looked hard to beat until Julie Vuchich (ICT) set the fastest time of the first round.
The second round saw Julie, Julian, Jo Irvine (MASE), Robert Bell (Assets), Ahmed Kahn (Digital & Technology) and Wade Russell (Retail Catering) progress to take the powerful Mustang out for a spin.
Julian was again the marker to beat with Wade confident that going last was the way to go. Wade set a sizzling pace around the course until the last corner that brought many of us unstuck, spinning it into a cone on the finish line, which meant an automatic disqualification.
This left the final 3 back in the Red Toyota 86. Julie went first setting a very solid time around the 30 second mark. Bob was up next in the one lap dash coming in slightly slower than Julie at about 31 seconds. Last with “2 hands on the trophy” according to our driving instructor, was Julian. Setting a cracking pace, the title was all but sealed until the fateful last corner took another victim with Julian fishtailing it across the line to end with a time of about 32 seconds.
Congratulations to Julie Vuchich who will now represent VenuesLive in the Beat The Blue Final. It was a great day out at Sydney Motorsport Park with VenuesLive making an $800 donation from the drivers to Police Legacy. We encourage everyone who can to make it out to the final on Saturday 7 September to support Julie and Police Legacy.
A big thank you to Wendy and the team at Sydney Motorsport Park for hosting us all for a fun filled afternoon and our monthly staff drinks!
