Bankwest Stadium played host to one of the most unique community sporting events in the country last week as the deciding fixture of The Wednesday League’s inaugural season was played at the venue on 23 September.

The Wednesday League is a first-of-its-kind grassroots football league created and produced by Year 12 students from The Forest High School on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The brains behind the League, Jude Dolan, saw an opportunity at the tail end of our busy events schedule and contacted the VenuesLive Commercial team to pitch his idea for the Grand Final – an ambitious aim to play at one of Australia’s newest stadiums – and one that ultimately paid off!

The league was competed between two Year 12 teams – The Forest Originals, Year 12’s most avid soccer fans, and the Northern Sydney Select, a “best of the rest” team that includes students with a passion for football but whose main hobbies may have resided elsewhere. At 1 game apiece going into the final, it was ultimately Northern Sydney Select who took out the inaugural tournament, winning 2-nil in Game 3.

In just a short period of time, The Wednesday League has managed to catch the eye of ABC News, the Sydney Morning Herald and other local journalists through documenting the league across their social media platforms, YouTube and sports streaming service SportsFlick; creating a broadcast experience and receiving the commentating services of renowned football commentators Peter Drury, Derek Rae and Simon Hill.

Game 3 of The Wednesday League will premiere on SportsFlick on Wednesday 7 October at 6.30pm
