Graham Mason, Head of Media, Communications & Government Relations and Nadia Owen, Meetings & Special Events Sales Manager, Optus Stadium

Following a successful 2019 debut, the Christmas Festival in Stadium Park is back on again in 2020.  Across the first three Sundays of December, all of the favourites are back – free Christmas movies on the Amphitheatre Screen, food trucks, artisan markets and lights, lights and more lights.  The Big Man in Red will obviously be making an appearance and, in sticking with these modern times, will be roaming the Stadium Park allowing children of all ages, to grab an ‘elfie’ (yes, I know, it’s a bad pun!).  The Twilight Stadium Tours – featuring the Christmas light show – have already sold out.  In fact they sold out in less than three hours.

While not actually Christmas, it felt and looked a lot Christmas when Optus Stadium hosted – at very short notice – Perth’s edition of Diner En Blanc in 2020.

For those unsure of how DEB works, it is the world’s biggest guerrilla picnic with people signing up, but unaware of where the location will be.  In this case, three weeks out, we at Optus Stadium were unaware that we were the location.  But once Government House bumped the event amid concerns surrounding mass gatherings, we stepped up and made the magic happen!  It was a true example of cross-departmental collaboration and the event – with over 2,000 attendees –  was planned with multiple meetings, all while retaining the required shroud of secrecy.

The all-white picnic started with a DJ and harpist combination during the setup period, and then with the sound of the stadium’s siren and the twinkling of the sports lights, the traditional napkin wave signalled the official start of the function. The true magic of the communal dinner came when punters lit thousands of sparklers during the brand-new sound & light show to signify the opening of the dance floor, lighting up the night sky and stadium after a dark year.  With DJ Timmy Trumpet on the decks, guests were dancing barefoot on the field-of-play, making the night fly by. The sea of white flooded social media and Optus Stadium’s hashtag trended as a result!

A big congrats to Nadia, Dorian, Gemma, Ella, Pam, Grant, Ryno and BGIS – among others – for pulling this event together.

The proof is always in the pudding as they say and this was the feedback from one delighted DEB organiser… The venue was a perfect secret location and you have all been a dream to work with. Overall, feedback from guests has been overwhelmingly positive and filled with excitement.”
